LEBANON, Tn. – Officials with the Wilson County Fair announced today that the long-time running county fair has debuted on the Top 50 Fairs in the US. The 2008 Wilson County Fair ran nine days from Friday August 15 through Saturday August 23. Craig Browning, spokesperson for the fair said, “This is a huge accomplishment for the over 300 volunteers that work so hard to put on this fair.” The total attendance for the 2008 festivities was 466,119, across the nine days. North America’s Top 50 fairs held their own, dropping only 2% from 41,468,926 in 2007 to 40,670,657 in 2008 in a year that posed difficult challenges. Among concerns for 2008 was the price of fuel. Guests at North America’s largest events can travel many miles to attend the event and managers were concerned fuel prices would adversely affect business, both in terms of cost to travel and the amount of money available to spend. While the 2008 Wilson County Fair took place during a time where the local economy was in a downhill spiral, patrons held on to the thought of staying close to home. “Many of our patrons attended last years fair instead of going on their usual family vacations; ‘stay-cations’ was the way to go in the summer of 2008,” Browning said.
