Wednesday, August 22 – 6:00 – Close – National Airport Canine Unit Explosive Detection Dogs
The Nashville International Airport has its own Department of Public Safety on property. One of the divisions within that department is their Police K-9 Unit which consists of four teams, each including an individual Officer and their canine partner. These teams have extensive training in explosive detection under the Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Security Administration. Each team of canine and handler are educated and certified through the National Canine Explosive Detection Program (NCEDP), located on Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. The unit's continued daily training is the most important tool in helping to keep the flying public safe. Current odor recognition and canine response behaviour is the key to successful detection during yearly NCEDP evaluations, which ensures confident day to day patrol. These working dogs are trained on many odors and in every part of the airport to include areas such as terminal, aircraft, cargo, baggage, vehicles, open spaces and the public themselves. Presently all the dogs in the unit are German Shepherds, who at the end of the day go home with their human partners...but who are happiest at the beginning of their day, when they are at work helping to deter and detect against the potential threats of terrorism.
